The Ombudsman Strengthens Cooperation With “Save The Children” To Protect Children’S Rights In Albania And The Region

THE OMBUDSMAN STRENGTHENS COOPERATION WITH “SAVE THE CHILDREN” TO PROTECT CHILDREN’S RIGHTS IN ALBANIA AND THE REGION

The People's Advocate of the Republic of Albania, Mr. Endrit Shabani, received in an official meeting the high-level delegation of the organization "Save the Children", headed by the Regional Director for the Middle East, Eastern Europe and North Africa, Mr. Ahmad Alhendawi.

This meeting marked an important step in the coordination of work between institutions for the protection of the most vulnerable groups, focusing particularly on children in street situations and those affected by migration processes. During the discussions, Mr. Shabani noted the special importance that this partnership takes on during the year 2026, a period in which the People's Advocate of Albania holds the mandate of President of the Mediterranean Association of Ombudsmen.

At the national level, the People's Advocate presented the vision for the modernization of the institution, aiming to move from a passive approach to a proactive stance. Increased attention will be paid to the cases of children who beg or live on the streets; the institution will no longer receive formal complaints, but will intervene directly to demand accountability from the responsible state bodies.

Also discussed was the urgent need to address school dropout and the situation of children in the Roma community, as well as the simplification of complaint procedures, making them more accessible to young people through new digital platforms.

The meeting concluded with the parties committing to renewing the Memorandum of Understanding and drafting a concrete action plan, which also serves as a strong support for the process of Albania's integration into the European Union.
