Strasbourg,

Dear
Mr. Dobjani,
On
the last day of my mandate as Council of Europe Commissioner for
Human Rights I should like to bid you farewell and thank you for
the constructive and generous cooperation with me and my
Office.
You
know how convinced I am that good working and personal relations
between us and our institutions are an important asset for the
coherent defence of fundamental rights of all the inhabitants of
our countries. My understanding of the real situation of human
nights in your country depended to a large extent on the
impartial, relevant, full and precise information I received
from your institution. I hope that, on your side, you may have
found it of assistance to receive political support from the
Commissioner for the issues raised by you, as well as for the
status and the means of your institution, and to be able to
discuss human rights issues with colleagues and outside experts
at our Round Tables.
I
trust that my successor, Thomas Hammarberg, will equally value
the relationship with you and the institution you are in charge
of.
I
wish you and him every success in your endeavours to work
jointly for the benefit of values, which are far from abstract,
but shape the lives of 800 million inhabitants in 46 countries.
Yours
sincerely,
Alvaro
Gil-Robles
